Sikkim officially became a part of the Indian Republic in 1975. After a series of political developments and a referendum where the majority of Sikkimese people voted in favor of joining India, the Indian Parliament passed the 36th Amendment to the Constitution, making Sikkim the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975.
